North Bergen man accused of attempted murder-for-hire plot

A North Bergen man was arrested this week in an attempted murder-for-hire scheme, authorities stated Friday.

Miguel Cortes, 37, was charged with first-degree conspiracy to commit murder following his arrest Tuesday outside his home on Paterson Plank Road, the Hudson County Prosecutor's Office said.

The North Bergen Police Department received a tip regarding a possible murder-for-hire scheme on May 9, the prosecutor's office said. An investigation determined Cortes offered money to another person to kill a woman, who ultimately was not harmed, the prosecutor's office stated. No other details about the alleged plot were released.

Cortes was taken to the Hudson County Correctional Facility ahead of a detention motion, which is tentatively scheduled for Monday.
