Norfolk State defensive lineman Nick Ackies was shot and killed Friday night. He was 18 years old.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, Ackies was found shot in an apartment building by police Friday night. A former Norfolk State football player was arrested in connection with the shooting and is being held without bond.

A 22-year-old Norfolk State graduate identified as Jaquan Anderson was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and using a gun in connection to Ackies’ death, the school said in a release. Melinda Wray with the Norfolk Police Department confirmed that information.

Ackies, a freshman and a native of Richmond, Virginia, was a backup defensive lineman for the team. He appeared in three of the team’s first seven games and had two tackles.

“This is such a tragic situation. Our prayers are with Nick’s family during this very difficult time,” Norfolk State athletic director Marty Miller said in a statement.

Norfolk State played its homecoming game vs. Savannah State as scheduled on Saturday. Savannah State won 27-9 and got its first victory of the season.
