NOFD offering free smoke alarms. Here’s how to get them
NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — When you turn the clocks in your home forward an hour this weekend for daylight saving time, don’t forget to check the batteries in your smoke alarms.
That’s the usual reminder that fire departments give twice a year, when we “spring forward” or “fall back.”

Now, the New Orleans Fire Department is offering something better: Residents in Orleans Parish can contact the NOFD to request free smoke alarms with free installation.
You can call the NOFD at 504-658-4714 or make a request online.
The smoke alarms offered in the program are the stand-alone type that operate solely on nine-volt batteries. The NOFD will provide enough smoke alarms for every room in your house.
However, NOFD leaders say it cannot change “hard-wired” smoke alarms that are powered by a home’s electricity. Instead, homeowners are urged to check the expiration date on those alarms because they can malfunction after ten years of operation.
