As part of my job I call on High Schools and Universities on a daily basis.
Believe it or not I do have a number of schools that have armed their staff and I like the idea. Police Officers play a very important part in our society.
But they cannot be everywhere at every moment.
detroit schools have metal detectors in schools... and they dont have school shooting... coincidence?
Where are no GUNS allowed? Schools. Where are the most shootings at? Schools. Where are the most GUNS at? Police stations. Where are the least shootings at? Police stations.
Gun-free zone, of course.
This wasn't a problem back in the days where kids got their rears tanned if they disrespected authority.
"With each school shooting, an endless debate resumes: should schools be equipped with security gates? Should more teachers carry weapons? And yet everyone seems to know that the outrage will slam into the inaction of lawmakers in the Republican-controlled Congress."
What does Congress have to do with the security measures and whether or not teachers can carry weapons in state controlled public schools? It's a state matter. If every state allowed properly trained teachers and staff to carry weapons, and it was widely known that they did and were well trained in their use, I think school shootings would become very rare. Remember, when seconds count, the cops are only minutes away!
There are no easy answers. There are places to start, at home with discipline and concerned parents providing caring supervision is a good place to begin. These violent video games do not help.
I honestly - believe these shootings - are the result of one child being bullied. Teachers/principals do nothing to stop this. IF a child has a bad home life in addition to being bullied at school...........do they reach a point - in which they just snap.
They see no way out. They are not adult enough - to think through a situation and come out with a solution. After so long - they decide to take revenge on people that continue to mentally torture them.
It would appear, that after all of these "School Shootings", going back to Sandy Hook, someone in a position of responsibility, at State level like the Governor, might implement:
Hardened Schools with Single Entry/Exit Pat-Down and Baggage Checkpoints, and a Lockdown System, that Locks all Exits and Entrances, with a Central Unlock in the School Office/Building Office, in case of Fire/Emergency.
Old School Metal Detectors are certainly, not the answer since just about ever Manufacturer makes Carbon-Fiber and Plastic Pistols, and Ceramic Knives are commonplace.
And NO, I don't give a damn about alleged "Student and Teacher Civil Rights", Public Safety overrides that falsely claimed rights, 100% of the time.
The two screeners should also be the Defenders of that "Single Entrance/Exit" for as long as there are Teachers and Students, inside the building.
There should always be 2 Screener-Defenders, so that there is at least 1 is on guard, at all times.
The ideal, Screener-Defender would be Armed National Guard or Active Reserve Infantry, with Children/Grand Children, attending the same school being protected.
The Screener-Defenders should be equipped with standard US Army/US Marine Infantry "Battle Gear", such as an M-16A3 or M-4A2, Standard Combat Load of Ammo, Kevlar Helmet, Body Armor, LBE, et al.
Which would allow for defense against external attacks by Domestic or Foreign Terrorist Groups.
This not a New Concept, every US Embassy run School, in a Dangerous Area uses this Defense Scenario.

Why was the school so negligent about safety? Even DesMoines Iowa schools have metal detectors and an officer on site. Gun free zones are useless if not enforced. It is like a speed zone where police never check for speeders and everyone knows it.
First off, Canada has had school shoootings, just not as many. Secondly, there should be armed staff/security or metal detectors at the schools. This still won't stop someone on a rampage though. I am thinking parenting and securing weapons at home have a large part to play in all this.
This Sunday, ALL TV channels need to show a program on the effects of gun violence. Make it brutal. ALL parents and their children need to watch it. NOTHING else will be allowed to be broadcast. No Kardasians, no nothing for this period of time. PARENTS and KIDS need to sit and actually TALK about the violence. Enough of your kids staring into their phones or video games all night and day. PARENTS MUST spend time with their kids BEFORE the victim becomes your Son or Daughter.
