'No One Owns an Idea'

In this time of big Facebook headlines, today's commenter borrowed wisdom from the movie The Social Network to address another set of fighting tech entrepreneurs.

Chiming in on Jeff Roberts' PaidContent story, which we syndicated, about a pair of former Democratic political advisers suing Arianna Huffington for allegedly stealing their idea for what would become The Huffington Post, commenter kenparcell invoked (more or less) the well-known Mark Zuckerberg line: "If you guys had invented Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook." Writes kenparcell:

This is so silly. The line in "The Social Network" said it the best: "If you had invented Facebook, you would have invented Facebook" (or something like that). No one owns an idea. Execution is everything. If you can get a copyright, trademark, or patent on something, then you can own it.

And it's a good point. Probably a lot of people thought it would be a good idea to create a machine that would allow you to talk to someone else not directly in front of you, but only Alexander Graham Bell gets credit for inventing it.
