No one hurt in two Kalamazoo house fires

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — No one was hurt in two Friday evening house fires in Kalamazoo.

Around 8:30 p.m., officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety were sent to the area of Ash Steet near Buchanan Avenue after receiving a call where a female was coughing and a smoke detector could be heard.

Responding officers found a home on fire. Once they confirmed that everyone was out of the home, crews worked to extinguish the fire.

KDPS said construction on the home and strong winds make it challenging to extinguish. After about an hour, the fire was under control.

No one was hurt.

Around 9:30 p.m., while on Ash Street, KDPS learned about another house fire on Grant Street near Davis Street.

Responding crews found fire coming from the second-floor windows and one person who was trapped on the second-floor porch. KDPS said crews helped them get down and away from the fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, officers determined that the fire was likely arson.

A Kalamazoo resident was arrested, KDPS said.

No one was hurt.
