No ‘lucky’ forecast: Storms likely for New Orleans on St. Patrick’s Day

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — Wet weather may impact weekend activities across the Gulf Coast as many prepare to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

Rounds of showers and thunderstorms are possible each day Friday through Sunday.

Friday: Mostly cloudy with a chance showers in the morning. Then, showers and thunderstorms likely late afternoon and overnight. Chance of rain 60 to 70 percent. High temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80 degrees with overnight lows in the mid 60s.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a isolated showers off and on throughout the day. Chance of rain 40 to 50 percent. Highs in the upper 70s with lows in the mid 60s.

Sunday: Overcast with waves of showers and thunderstorms. Some storms may produce locally heavy rainfall. Chance of rain 70 to 80 percent during the day, decreasing to around 30 percent overnight. Highs in the mid 70s. Lows in mid 50s.

Models have still be back and forth on where the heaviest rain may fall, but in general 1 to 3 inches of rain can be expected across the area with isolated totals of 3 to 4 inches possible.

NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center has placed most of South Louisiana and South Mississippi under a “Marginal Risk” for flooding, which is threat level 1 out of 4 on their scale, Friday through Sunday.

Once a cold front moves across the region by early Monday morning, any lingering rain will clear out and temperatures will be slightly cooler. Expect high temperatures in the mid 60s Monday and Tuesday next week with overnight lows in the 40s and 50s.
