‘There’s no accountability’: Stevante Clark remembers his brother Stephon 6 years after his death

(FOX40.COM) — Monday will mark six years since Stephon Clark was killed in a shooting involving Sacramento police officers.

In 2018, officers shot and killed Stephon Clark, 22, in his grandmother’s backyard in the Meadowview neighborhood. Police said they thought he was armed at the time, as they were tracking a thief with a toolbar who was breaking into homes.

It later turned out that Clark was unarmed and was holding a cell phone. His death led to protests that took over streets in the city and across the country.

The Sacramento County District Attorney did not charge any of the officers involved in the shooting.

With the sixth anniversary of Clark’s death approaching, Stevante and Sequette Clark, Stephon’s brother and mother, joined FOX40 on Friday to discuss upcoming events 6th Annual Stephon Clark Legacy Week, a series of events honoring his memory.

“I feel like slow progress is better than no progress, but in the words of Dr. King, justice delayed is justice denied,” Stevante Clark said in an interview with FOX40.com on Friday. “If you see a school being created, you see Stephon’s House being created, you see sizeable settlements being created, but yet there’s no accountability, there’s no justice… The fact those officers have not been fired, charged, and convicted pisses me off to this day.”

The 6th Annual Stephon Clark Legacy Week began on Friday with events including a candlelight vigil honoring all families of police brutality and community violence. A ribbon cutting/grand re-opening of Stephon’s House, a resource and recreational hub, also took place.

A “Unity in the Community” block party is among Saturday’s events that will take place at Meadowview Park from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Among Sunday’s events is the re-opening of Stephon’s House, a resource and recreational center, at 11 a.m.

“I am now working with other mothers to help heal from the loss of a child,” Sequette Clark said. “We will be having the first graduation for the mothers this legacy week on Sunday. We’re excited about that.

Legacy week events will accumulate on Monday with the Justice and Accountability March/Rally at the State Capitol from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The fallout of Clark’s death

Subsequent investigations by the Sacramento County District Attorney and the California Department of Justice found that the officers’ actions were within both state law and the policies of the Sacramento Police Department.

Clark’s family won a wrongful death suit against the city, which has promised outreach to the underserved district where Clark was killed as an investment in improving reading.

The city provided $2.4 million as part of a settlement for Clark’s two children in 2019.

In August 2022, the city of Sacramento settled with Clark’s parents, which included the terms of the city paying his parents $1.7 million and the family agreeing to end legal action.

Sacramento native and former San Francisco 49ers player Arik Armstead honored Clark by wearing a decal of his name on his helmet during the 2020 season.
