No. 3 Texas softball takes series opener via mercy rule 13-0 over BYU

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 3 Texas scored seven runs in the second inning to clobber BYU 13-0 in a Big 12 softball series opener Thursday at McCombs Field. The game ended after five innings due to the 8-run mercy rule.

The Longhorns (22-3, 3-1 Big 12) built an 8-0 lead after two innings and then started hitting the ball out of the park. Joley Mitchell, Katie Stewart and Katie Cimusz all hit homers with Mitchell’s driving in three runs in the third inning. Stewart and Cimusz each hit solo home runs with Cimusz’s coming in a pinch-hit role.

Mac Morgan picked up her fifth pitching win of the season, allowing one hit with three strikeouts in five innings. She threw 68 pitches and faced 16 batters, forcing 12 of them to ground out.

Kayden Henry, Mia Scott, Mitchell and Bella Dayton all had two hits for the Longhorns.

The teams moved up their game Friday to 11:30 a.m. due to the threat of severe weather in the Austin area.
