No. 2 Longhorns drop series opener to No. 8 Oklahoma State in Stillwater

AUSTIN (KXAN) — No. 8 Oklahoma State hit three home runs and shut out No. 2 Texas 5-0 in Big 12 Conference softball action Thursday in Stillwater.

The Longhorns (28-4, 8-2 Big 12) had seven hits off Cowgirls pitcher Lexi Kilfoyl but couldn’t get the big hit to push any runs across. Texas had two runners in scoring position in the top of the third with one out but Kilfoyl struck out Kayden Henry and Mia Scott to escape the threat. The Longhorns were 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position.

Tallen Edwards, Karli Godwin and Micaela Wark hit home runs for the Cowgirls (28-5, 8-2). All of the home runs were solo and Wark added a 2-run double in the third inning.

Texas freshman pitcher Teagan Kavan was tagged with the loss after allowing three earned runs on four hits in 2 1/3 innings. Mac Morgan pitched the rest of the game, allowing two earned runs on five hits.

Joley Mitchell, Viviana Martinez and Ashton Maloney each had two hits for Texas.

The teams play Game 2 of their series at 7 p.m. Friday. It will be broadcast on ESPN2.
