NN Mayor Phillip Jones to hold press conference on new federal clean truck standards

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Newport News mayor Phillip Jones will join local leaders on Thursday for a press conference to show support for new federal clean truck standards.

The new clean truck standard, adopted by the EPA, sets stronger emissions standards in the hopes of reducing emissions from heavy-duty vehicles in the transportation sector in the state of Virginia. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, heavy-duty vehicles, while only making up 10% of the road, generate more than 25% of the total global warming emissions from the transportation sector.

According to Clean Jobs America, Virginia ranks 11th in state with clean energy employment, with 95,643 clean energy jobs reported in 2022, including 7,782 alone in clean vehicle jobs.

The press conference is scheduled for April 18 starting at 10 a.m. at the Newport News Transit Center.

Mayor Phillip Jones, along with Tim Cywinski and Sybil Pappas, will discuss the recent finalization of the clean truck standards for model years 2027 through 2023, as well as urge leaders to defend the new standards.

The full press conference will be available to watch on the Sierra Club Virginia Facebook page here.
