NMSU softball sweeps double header against San Diego

LAS CRUCES – New Mexico State softball grabbed a pair of wins in its double header against San Diego at the NM State Softball Complex on Friday.

In game one, New Mexico State beat San Diego, 9-2.

Hanks High School graduate Desirae Spearman pitched a complete game and collected her sixth win of the season. The freshman pitched 7.0 innings, allowed 5 hits, 2 earned runs, and struck out two in a contest where she faced 31 total batters. Spearman is 6-0 on the season in the circle for the Aggies.

At the plate, Spearman went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.

New Mexico State headed into the bottom of the 4th tied with San Diego, 1-1, and left the inning with a 9-1 lead. NMSU scored eight runs on four hits in the inning. San Diego committed three errors in that frame. Seven of the Aggies’ eight runs in the innings were unearned.

In game two, Kendra Levesque’s solo homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to put NMSU up 7-3 was the difference maker at the end of the contest. San Diego tacked on three more runs in its last chance in the top of the 7th inning before NMSU’s Jaileen Mancha got pinch-hitter Emma Giaime to ground out to shortstop to end the game.

New Mexico State extended its win streak to five games. NMSU is now 20-12 on the season and 6-3 in league play.

NMSU and San Diego will play the final game of the series on Saturday at 12 p.m. MT at the NM State Softball Complex in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
