NMSU baseball falls 13-7 to No. 24 Texas Tech, 7-game win streak snapped

LUBBOCK, Texas – NM State Aggies fell against #24 Texas Tech in game one of the two game series, 7-13 on March 12 in Lubbock, Texas. With the loss the Aggies lost their seven-game win streak.

In the bottom of the first starting pitcher Cade Swenson got himself out of a bases-loaded jam on a pop up in foul territory to third-baseman Sheehan O’Connor for the third out of the inning. In the bottom of the second Swenson went three up three down to send the Aggies to the third inning.

The Aggies took an early lead in the top of the third, scoring two runs. Damone Hale hit an RBI single to score Edwin Martinez-Pagani, hit between the second and first baseman to score the first run of the game. Keith Jones II would then score on an error by the Red Raiders shortstop to give the Aggies a two-run lead.

The Red Raiders managed to tie the game up in the bottom of the third on an RBI groundout and sacrifice fly to right fielder Titus Dumitru.

In the bottom of the fourth right-handed pitcher Kade Benavidez came into the game in relief of Swenson. Swenson finished his outing with three strikeouts, giving up three runs on three hits.

Benavidez was unable to make it out of the fourth. Cho Tofte came into the game to pick up where Benavidez left off. In the fourth the Red Raiders managed to put up nine runs to go up by nine.

In the top of the fifth the Aggies added one more run on an RBI double hit by Dumitru, his sixth of the year.

Tyler Hoeft came into the game on the mound in the sixth for Tofte, he threw for two innings giving up one hit and striking out three Red Raiders. In the bottom of the sixth the Red Raiders added two more runs on a two-run home run hit by Tracer Lopez.

In the top of the seventh Damone Hale hit a towering two run home run with an exit velocity of 108 mph and 460 feet for his third of the year. The Aggies would hold the Red Raiders scoreless in the seventh.

In the top of the eighth the Aggies managed to cut the deficit to six runs as Martinez-Pagani hit an RBI single to right-center to score Nick Gore. Austin Corbett would earn his third RBI of the season on a sacrifice fly to left field.

Matt Romero came into the game in the bottom of the eighth for Hoeft, his final line would be two innings pitched, giving up two runs on three hits, striking out three Red Raiders. Romero would hold the Red Raiders scoreless in the eighth, only giving up two hits and striking out a batter.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:

  • Nick Gore extends his on-base streak to 16 games with a single in the second inning.

  • Hale, Gore and Marinez-Pagani all had two hits in the game.

  • This was Gore’s ninth multi-hit game this season.

  • Hale drove in three runs for the Aggies, this is his sixth multi-RBI game.

  • Dumitru now has a seven-game hitting streak and 13 game on-base streak, he earned this on a double in the fifth.

  • The Aggies went four for eight when leading the inning off.
