NJ Transit ticket refund: get paid before expiration policy starts

NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – If you have old NJ Transit tickets sitting around, you can get your money back once they expire.

NJ Transit announced that starting on July 1, one-way bus, rail and light rail tickets will expire after 30 days – meaning any existing tickets not used by July 31 will be useless.

But stocked-up tickets won’t be a complete loss, after all. Starting on Aug. 1, riders can get a refund for unused one-ride and 10-trip tickets purchased before June 1, NJ Transit announced Wednesday. Refund requests can be made through Dec. 31.

Any tickets purchased on or after June 1 will only be valid through July 31 and, if not used, will not be eligible for a refund.

Here’s how to get a refund on expiring NJ Transit tickets:

  1. Paper Tickets: Unused paper tickets can be brought to a customer service office for refund. Bring contact information, receipts and credit card information. Refunds will take longer for customers with no receipt or transaction information.

  2. Web Tickets: Web tickets must be printed out and brought in person for return.

  3. Mobile App Tickets: Mobile tickets bought before June 1 will be automatically refunded as an equivalent ticket credit to the customer’s electronic wallet.

Even with the refund, the old ticket may not get you as far as you initially intended. In April, NJ Transit’s board unanimously approved a 15% fare hike, which will go into effect on July 1 and will increase by 3% each summer after.
