NJ Transit ready for Super Bowl fans' return trip

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The record number of Super Bowl fans who used New Jersey Transit to get to the game are headed home.

NJ Transit spokesman John Durso Jr. says nearly 28,000 passengers rode trains from Secaucus to MetLife Stadium. That broke the previous record of 22,000 that was set for the U2 concert in 2009.

Durso says the rail shuttle worked as designed. Now, the agency will do it again for the fans' return trips after Seattle's lopsided victory over Denver.

There were delays earlier in the day when all lines but Atlantic City rail were running 20 to 30 minutes behind schedule because of Super Bowl congestion. But the trains were back on track by 4 p.m.

NJ Transit officials say the plan is to load the cars and go when filled.
