NJ Transit to hold public hearings on proposed 15% fare hike for commuters

NEW JERSEY (PIX11) – NJ Transit will kick off public hearings on its proposed fare hike this week.

The agency previously announced a proposed 15% fare increase for transit riders — all to offset a $119 million budget gap. There would be an annual 3% increase thereafter.

NJ Transit said the massive deficit is due, in part, to decreased ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fare hike would take effect in July, if it’s approved.

Public hearings on the fare increase will be held Monday in Cherry Hill at 11 a.m. and Atlantic City at 6 p.m.
