Nintendo Switch Sales Have Already Hit 10 Million Units
Looks like Nintendo has hit on its hands.
The company’s Switch console has sold 10 million units in just nine months. What’s notable isn’t just the sheer sales number (or the fact that it’s likely to climb higher before the holiday season ends), but also the fact that it tops the company’s initial full-year sales estimate as well as the sales of its predecessor, the Wii U.
The latter console sold just 13.56 million units over five years. The 3DS handheld console, meanwhile, has sold 16.85 million units worldwide since its 2011 launch.
The Switch has been supported by one of the strongest software launches in Nintendo history. Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild are two of the year’s top ranked titles on any video game system. And the system’s ability to let players enjoy games on both TVs and on the go has captured gamer interest.
“As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America President and COO in a statement. “The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season.”
