Ninilchik woman on ATV dies after collision with pickup

May 17—Alaska State Troopers said an 87-year-old Ninilchik woman died Tuesday after the ATV she was driving was hit by a pickup as she crossed the Sterling Highway.

Birch Allen was trying to cross the highway onto Oil Well Road when a man driving a pickup struck the ATV while turning from the road onto the highway, troopers said. The man was cited for failure to exercise due care, they said.

A troopers spokesman on Friday identified the pickup driver as 69-year-old Terry Reid.

Allen was transported to a hospital but died there, troopers said. No other injuries were reported, they said.

Asked if additional charges are possible, troopers spokesman Austin McDaniel in an email said the investigation into the incident "is active and ongoing."
