Nikki Haley and George Conway spat on Twitter after he calls GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik 'lying trash'

Conservative attorney George Conway and former United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley got into a heated Twitter exchange after Conway referred to GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik, N.Y., as "lying trash."

Conway's comments over the weekend sparked backlash from Haley. "This is absolutely uncalled for and disgusting. What is wrong with people? George Conway is the last person that can call someone 'trash'. #Pathetic," she wrote on Twitter Monday.

The outspoken critic of the president and husband of White House Adviser Kellyanne Conway called for donations to Stefanik's Democratic opponent after Friday's impeachment inquiry hearing.

Conway was quick to fire back at Haley: "Oh, @NikkiHaley, just the other day you said that the world’s biggest pathological liar, @realDonaldTrump, was a 'truthful' man. *That’s* the very essence of disgusting, trashy, and pathetic—utterly shameless and transparent dishonesty."

Haley had said in an interview with NBC News of the president, "In every instance that I dealt with him, he was truthful, he listened and he was great to work with."

Stefanik has emerged as a prominent Republican voice opposing the impeachment probe into President Donald Trump, who called her a "new Republican Star" in a tweet.

Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., blocked Stefanik from questioning former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch during time allotted for either the ranking Republican committee member, Devin Nunes, Calif., or designated counsel, citing House rules.

This led to widespread criticism from the GOP. Stefanik tweeted that Schiff was not allowing "duly elected Members of Congress" to question Yovanovitch because they are Republicans.

Conway criticized Stefanik in a series of tweets over the weekend, calling her a "bald-faced liar" who engaged "in a cheap and mendacious stunt."

Haley tweeted an article from conservative website Townhall, which shared screenshots of now-deleted tweets from Conway that included doctored photos of Stefanik flipping off a camera at the hearing.

"You’ll say anything to get the vice-presidential nomination, won’t you, @NikkiHaley?" Conway tweeted.

Conway made a rare television appearance the day of the first public impeachment hearing as a commentator on impeachment who accused Trump of acting in his own self-interest in his interactions with Ukraine.
