We've already seen Spider-Man portrayed by several different actors over the past 20 years, with Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland all slipping the mask on for the big screen.

But there's set to be a new Spider-Man in town this year and the casting news is a bit of a surprise, as legendary actor Nicolas Cage has been announced as taking on the role, according to Collider.

Don't worry, we're not losing Holland just yet – he's still signed up for next year's Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, after all.

Cage is taking on a slightly different role, as he's been cast as Spider-Man Noir in upcoming film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which is separate from Marvel's current Spider-Man franchise starring Holland as the web-slinger.

Into the Spider-Verse takes us into a comic book multi-verse which features different dimensions, each one with its own Spider-Man.

The Noir dimension is a darker take on Spider-Man, and is traditionally set during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

We may not be seeing a massive amount of Spider-Man Noir in the movie though, since its main focus is on Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) becoming Spider-Man and being tutored by another dimension's Peter Parker (New Girl's Jake Johnson).

And it's entirely possible that there could be several other Spider-Men slinging their way around the movie, so we may soon be getting news of even more famous castings.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is released on December 14 and will also feature the voices of Hailee Steinfeld, Liev Schreiber and Mahershala Ali.

It's shaping up to be quite a heroic year for Cage, who's also confirmed that he'll be voicing Superman in Teen Titans Go! To the Movies.
