Nick Saban regales tale of breakup with high school girlfriend (Video)
Nick Saban has a better sense of humor than he gets credit for.
Sure, he can often seem surly, but if you pay enough attention Saban will often interject some dry wit into his answers for reporters. On Wednesday, Saban told a tale about a time when he was young and his girlfriend broke up with him. He let that impact the work he was doing at his dad’s gas station in West Virginia.
His dad wasn’t exactly thrilled.

So where does that tie in to football? Well, Saban, with the Tide traveling to face Texas A&M this weekend, was asked if there were any plans made for some of his players from the Houston area to go home to visit family affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Saban admitted he hadn’t thought about it considering how structured trips to road games generally are. In the end, he tied it back to what his dad taught him back in the day. Sometimes you need to focus on the task at hand no matter what else is going on in life.
“Whatever happened in the hurricane happened and it’s a bad thing and we want to support everybody every way we can. And we certainly did that as much as we could,” Saban said. “But if we don’t go out there and play a good game, we’re going to have all the problems that we had with the hurricane and then we’re going to have the problem that we lost. So, it kind of goes back to what my dad said, I think.”
When Harvey hit, Saban revealed that the school was able to assist the father of defensive back Tony Brown, who is from Beaumont, Texas.
“Their street was flooded,” Saban said of the Brown’s. “I don’t think it got in their house, but they lost water and power and all that.”
Brown’s father is in poor health and unable to stay in a shelter. The Sabans have stepped in to help the Brown family.
“We are actually helicoptering him tonight to a hotel in College Station,” Saban said. “I think when things like this happen, it’s all about people. Whoever they root for, we need to stick together to help other folks. I’ve been really, really proud of the way our family at the University of Alabama has helped whenever other people have had tragedies that they’ve had to deal with and circumstances that we can help them overcome.”
Alabama athletics also collected donations and helped send an 18-wheeler full of supplies to the Houston area to help folks affected by Harvey.
