STORY: President Daniel Ortega’s government has banned Holy Week street processions in the past due to security concerns. This year, human rights defenders and local media reported warnings against priests taking part in Easter processions on the street.

However, the government has not issued an official statement on Easter processions this year.

In the capital city, the Way of the Cross was held inside the cathedral’s patio to avoid risks.

Relations with the church soured in 2018, following deadly anti-government protests that Catholic leaders sought to mediate. Ortega viewed their efforts as an attempted coup.

Good Friday marks Jesus' death by crucifixion. It continues to Sunday when Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead.
