NHL working out details to have its players in 2014 Winter Olympics
STOCKHOLM - The NHL intends to participate in next year's Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, but there are some details still to be worked out including approval from the owners.
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly is quoted on the International Ice Hockey Federation website saying the league is proceeding under the assumption that NHL players will play in Sochi.
Representatives from the league, the NHL Players' Association, the IIHF, the International Olympic Committee and the Sochi organizing committee met today in Stockholm to work on a plan for NHL players to participate in the Olympics.
The NHL has participated in the last four previous Winter Olympics starting in 1998 in Nagano, Japan.
Daly says one of the issues still be resolved is insuring between 160 and 180 NHL players whose total contract value would be around $3 billion.
Stockholm and Helsinki are co-hosting this year`s IIHF world hockey championship.
