NHL Roundup: Penguins' Vokoun released from hospital
Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tomas Vokoun was released from a hospital on Wednesday after having a procedure to dissolve a blood clot in his pelvis.
Penguins coach Dan Bylsma is unsure when Vokoun will be able to return to the ice.
The 37-year-old Vokoun noticed swelling in his thigh after a Saturday morning practice and went to a hospital, where the blood clot was discovered and immediately removed.
Vokoun has dealt with blood clots before. In April 2006, he was diagnosed with a rare blood condition that causes multiple clots, forcing him to miss the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.
To add depth during Vokoun's absence, the Penguins signed Jeff Deslauriers to an AHL tryout deal.
Marc-Andre Fleury is the Penguins' No. 1 goaltender and Jeff Zatkoff likely will be the backup until Vokoun returns.
Vokoun joined the Penguins last season and played in 20 regular-season games as Fleury's backup. The veteran also stepped in during the playoffs when Fleury struggled and he helped the Penguins reach the Eastern Conference finals.
Vokoun finished the 2012-13 regular season with a 13-4-0 record, a .919 save percentage and 2.45 goals-against average for the Penguins. In 11 postseason games, he had a 2.01 GAA and a .933 save percentage.
---The Edmonton Oilers placed veteran forward Ryan Jones on waivers, the team announced.
The 29-year-old Jones had signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Oilers in July after an injury-shortened 2013 season.
Jones suffered an eye injury during a lockout practice last year that required surgery. He returned to the ice in late February to play in 27 games and contribute seven points.
---Nashville Predators forward Viktor Stalberg suffered a shoulder injury during Tuesday night's exhibition game against Tampa Bay and will be out three to four weeks, the team announced.
Stalberg went down in the first period of the game against the Lightning and didn't return to the ice.
The Swede is starting his first season with the Predators after signing a four-year, $12 million contract during the summer.
The 27-year-old played for the Stanley Cup-champion Chicago Blackhawks last season. He produced nine goals and 14 assists during the regular season but had no goals and three assists in 19 playoff games.
---The latest casualty from Sunday's Toronto-Buffalo exhibition-game brawl is Sabres forward Corey Tropp.
Tropp sustained a broken jaw in a fight with Jamie Devane of the Maple Leafs and underwent surgery, the team announced. Tropp is expected to miss five to six weeks.
The fight resulted in more than 200 penalty minutes and also fines and suspensions.
The 6-foot-5, 217-pound Devane said he didn't initiate the fight, but the Sabres disagreed. Buffalo coach Ron Rolston blamed Devane and was upset that Tropp was knocked out in the skirmish.
