NHL Roundup: Gomez signs with Panthers, Palffy announces retirement
Veteran center Scott Gomez signed a one-year contract with the Florida Panthers on Wednesday, the team announced.
Gomez, 33, played for the San Jose Sharks last season after his contract was bought out by the Montreal Canadiens. In 39 regular-season games with the Sharks, Gomez had two goals and 13 assists.
Gomez's one-year deal with the Panthers is worth $900,000, according to Sportsnet. That would be a raise from his one-year, $700,000 contract with the Sharks in 2012-13.
Gomez has played for the New Jersey Devils (1999-2007), New York Rangers (2007-2009), Canadiens (2009-2012) and Sharks. He has 171 career goals and ranks first among active U.S.-born players in assists (530) and points (701) and second in games played (941).
---The Calgary Flames signed forward Josh Jooris to a two-year entry-level deal worth $832,500. He will receive a base salary of $70,000 per year along with a $92,500 bonus both years for a total annual pay of $925,000.
Jooris spent three seasons at Union College, recording 29 goals and 59 assists over 117 games, and is leaving the school with a year of eligibility remaining to join the Flames' prospect camp this summer.
---Ziggy Palffy, who appeared in more than 700 career NHL games, announced he will retire.
Palffy spent last season with HC 36 Skalica of the Slovak Extraliga, leading the league with 73 points in 39 games. He was a three-time 40-goal scorer in the NHL, including a career-high 48 goals in 1996-97.
He spent time with the Isles, Kings and Penguins during his NHL career.
