Jan 6 (The Sports Xchange) - Minnesota Wild center Mikko Koivu, who leads the team in points, underwent surgery on Monday to repair a broken ankle and is expected to be sidelined a month, the team announced.

Koivu, the team captain, suffered the injury in Saturday's game against Washington. He returned after the injury and added two assists, but later left the game for good.

He was placed on injured reserve, and the team expects him to make a full recovery.

Koivu, 30 has eight goals and 27 assists this season for a team-high 35 points through 44 games.

The NHL suspended Buffalo Sabres defenseman Tyler Myers for three games, without pay, for an illegal check to the head of New Jersey Devils forward Dainius Zubrus during Saturday's game, the league announced.

The incident occurred at 7:02 of the third period, and Myers was assessed a minor penalty for an illegal check to the head.

Myers was suspended for boarding in March 2012.
