Jan 7 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Tuesday's National Hockey League games - - - Lightning 4, Jets 2 Martin St. Louis scored midway through the third period, then fired the insurance goal into an empty net to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a victory over the Winnipeg Jets. The goals were the 18th and 19th this season for the 37-year-old right winger, who showed plenty of character after being left off Team Canada's 25-man roster for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, earlier in the day. Tampa Bay (26-13-4) finished a four-game swing through western Canadian cities with three victories while the Jets (19-22-5) lost their fourth consecutive game. - - - Predators 3, Sharks 2 Nashville Predators center David Legwand scored a goal and assisted another during a three-goal second period that led his team past San Jose. Rookie goaltender Marek Mazanec had 26 saves as the Predators (19-19-6) opened a critical five-game homestand by snapping a three-game losing streak. They entered the contest seven points behind Minnesota and Phoenix for the Western Conference's final playoff spot. Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski scored their 20th and 19th goals respectively for San Jose (27-11-6) in the defeat. - - - Coyotes 6, Flames 0 Phoenix right wing Mikkel Boedker scored his career-high 13th goal as part of a three-goal second period, and goaltender Thomas Greiss had his second career shutout in the Coyotes' victory over the Calgary Flames. Shane Doan and Martin Hanzal also scored in the second period while Lauri Korpikoski, Michael Stone and Rob Klinkhammer scored in the third as the Coyotes tied their highest-scoring game of the season. Greiss finished with 27 saves and the Coyotes (21-12-9) won for just the second time in seven games. The Flames (15-22-6) have won only two of their last 11 games. - - - Flyers 3, Devils 2 (overtime) Brayden Schenn scored with 3:10 remaining in overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a victory over the New Jersey Devils. Devils right wing Michael Ryder scored a shorthanded goal with 29.6 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime but the Devils (17-18-9) could not avoid losing their third straight game. Goaltender Ray Emery made 31 saves for the Flyers (22-17-4), who are 9-2-1 in their past 12 games. - - - Islanders 5, Maple Leafs 3 Frans Nielsen, Calvin de Haan and Cal Clutterbuck scored third-period goals as the New York Islanders defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs. Kyle Okposo and Michael Grabner also scored for the Islanders (16-22-7), who broke open a 2-2 tie in the third. John Tavares added two assists. Tyler Bozak and left wingers Mason Raymond and Joffrey Lupul scored for the Maple Leafs (21-18-5), who have lost two in a row after winning three straight. - - - Ducks 5, Bruins 2 Anaheim center Mathieu Perreault scored twice to guide the Ducks to a victory over the Boston Bruins. Ryan Getzlaf and right winger Teemu Selanne each had two assists and Corey Perry notched his 24th goal of the season as the Ducks (32-9-5) won their fourth in a row and 14th in the past 15 games. Anaheim also registered its eighth straight win at home, where the Ducks are 18-0-2 and have yet to lose a game in regulation. The Bruins (28-13-2) lost for the first time in three games. - - - Blues 5, Oilers 2 The St. Louis Blues scored three goals in the second period to beat Edmonton for the second time in a few weeks. The Blues, who coasted to a 6-0 victory over the Oilers on Dec. 21, got a go-ahead goal from David Backes and follow-up scores from Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrik Berglund as St. Louis netted the final three scores. The Blues are 29-7-5 on the season, have won six in a row and have 10 players named to the Olympics while the Oilers have been stumbling through the season since opening night. Nail Yakupov and Mark Arcobello scored for Edmonton (14-27-5), who tied the game twice in the second. - - - Penguins 5, Canucks 4 (shootout) Center Sidney Crosby scored the only goal in a shootout, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a win over the Vancouver Canucks. Crosby netted the winner after he forced overtime by scoring the goal that created a 4-4 tie in the final minute of regulation time. Sixteen seconds earlier, he assisted on the goal that started Pittsburgh's rally from a 4-2 deficit. The Penguins (32-12-1) posted their third straight win, while the Canucks (23-13-9) suffered their fifth consecutive loss. Defensemen Jason Garrison and Chris Tanev, Chris Higgins and Zack Kassian had the Vancouver goals. - - - Wild 2, Kings 1 (shootout) Minnesota goaltender Darcy Kuemper stopped 39 shots and winger Nino Neiderreiter scored the game-tying goal in the third period and the shootout winner to lead the Wild past the Los Angeles Kings. The win was Minnesota's (23-17-6) third straight. The Kings (26-13-5) lost for the sixth time in their last seven games and failed to pick up ground on the second place San Jose Sharks in the Pacific Division.
