NHL-Highlights of Saturday's NHL games

Jan 25 (The Sports Xchange) - Highlights of Saturday's National Hockey League games. - - - Blues 4, Islanders 3 (shootout) Alexander Steen and Kevin Shattenkirk scored in the shootout to lift the St. Louis Blues to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders. T.J. Oshie forced overtime for the Blues (35-11-5) by scoring with 26.7 seconds left in regulation. The Islanders (21-25-8) looked like they had won in overtime when Thomas Vanek tipped in a shot by John Tavares but the goal was overturned after a replay because Vanek appeared to kick the puck into the goal. Vladimir Tarasenko scored twice for the Blues, while goaltender Jaroslav Halak made 33 saves. - - - Bruins 6, Flyers 1 Zdeno Chara and Jarome Iginla each scored twice to lead the Boston Bruins to a 6-1 victory over the slumping Philadelphia Flyers. Reilly Smith and Patrice Bergeron also had goals, David Krejci had three assists and goaltender Tuukka Rask registered a career-best 23rd win. Claude Giroux scored Philadelphia's only goal. The Bruins (32-15-3) are 3-0-1 in their last four games and remain first in the Atlantic Division. The Flyers (25-22-6) are 0-3-1 in their last four and have fallen to eighth in the Eastern Conference. - - - Hurricanes 6, Senators 3 Carolina's Eric Staal and Manny Malhotra scored 32 seconds apart during a four-goal second period as the Hurricanes continued their home domination of Ottawa with a 6-3 victory over the Senators. Carolina (23-19-9) have won three in a row and nine of 12 games to move back into playoff contention in the Metropolitan Division. They beat the Senators (22-20-10) for the second time this season, outscoring them a combined 10-4. The Hurricanes are now 11-0-1 at home against Ottawa over the last 12 meetings in Raleigh. - - - Sabres 5, Blue Jackets 2 Christian Ehrhoff and Marcus Foligno scored short-handed goals and the Buffalo Sabres cooled off the NHL's hottest team with a 5-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Blue Jackets had won eight games in a row, the second longest streak in the league this season. But the Sabres, who had lost five straight, took a 1-0 lead on Matt Ellis' goal 2:21 into the game and never trailed. Steve Ott and Cody Hodgson scored for the Sabres, and Ehrhoff had two assists. - - - Lightning 5, Avalanche 2 Tampa Bay's center Tyler Johnson scored three goals, including the clincher in the final five minutes, as the Lightning downed Colorado 5-2. Undrafted and years in the making as an NHL contributor, Johnson, 23, now has 16 goals this season and outdid Colorado's Nathan MacKinnon, an 18-year-old who was taken with the top pick in the 2013 draft. MacKinnon had an assist but saw Johnson tie him for the rookie points lead at 34. Colorado dropped to 32-14-5 as Tampa Bay improved to 31-16-5. - - - Capitals 5, Canadiens 0 Washington's Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 36th goal and assisted on Casey Wellman's first of the season while goalie Braden Holtby made 21 saves for his second shutout in the Capitals' 5-0 win against the Montreal Canadiens. Ovechkin, who returned after missing two games because of a lower-body injury, has four goals in his past five games. John Erskine, Jay Beagle and John Carlson also scored for the Capitals, who ended a five-game losing streak with their first win in eight games (1-5-2). - - - Jets 5, Maple Leafs 4 (overtime) In a game where no lead was safe and coaches took no comfort no matter what the score, the Winnipeg Jets won an old-fashioned shootout over the Toronto Maple Leafs with an exciting 5-4 victory. It was not the post-overtime skills competition that decides tied games these days but more like the kind of game ice hockey fans used to see in the 1980s. Jets defenseman-turned-forward Dustin Byfuglien finished the end-to-end affair with a wrist shot to the top corner behind Jonathan Bernier 2:44 into overtime. - - - Stars 3, Penguins 0 After starting the week with a loss in Nashville, the Dallas Stars continued their offensive surge with a 3-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Dallas (24-20-8), who beat the Minnesota Wild 4-0 on Tuesday and the Toronto Maple Leafs 7-1 on Thursday, received goals from Sergei Gonchar, Jamie Benn and Rich Peverley in the win over the Pens. Goalie Kari Lehtonen stopped 24 shots to earn his second straight shutout for Dallas and the 25th of his career. - - - Sharks 3, Wild 2 (overtime) Contract extensions agreed upon Friday by center Joe Thornton and left winger Patrick Marleau paid immediate dividends on Saturday. Thornton scored his second goal of the game 3:30 into overtime after center Patrick Marleau tied it in regulation as the San Jose Sharks beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2. San Jose won its sixth straight and opened a 10-point lead on third-place Los Angeles while keeping pace with first-place Anaheim in the Pacific Division. - - - Ducks 3, Kings 0 Two early first-period goals propelled the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-0 victory over the Los Angeles Kings in the first ever Stadium Series outdoor game on the West Coast before a crowd of 54,099 at Dodger Stadium. Right winger Corey Perry scored his club-leading 25th goal and left winger Matt Beleskey produced his fifth as the Ducks (39-10-5) handed the rival Kings (29-18-6) their fifth straight defeat. Anaheim also beat Los Angeles for the second time in the past three days. Ducks goaltender Jonas Hiller stopped 36 shots. (Editing by Peter Rutherford and John O'Brien)
