NHL denies Canucks' request to send mascot to draft lottery
The Vancouver Canucks submitted a rather unusual request to the NHL with regards to who would represent the team at the draft lottery.
According to Elliotte Friedman, Vancouver GM Jim Benning wanted mascot Fin the Whale to represent the team. The league declined (because, obviously), but you have to respect Benning for asking the difficult question.
The Canucks GM may be onto something. If the NHL wants to boost ratings for the draft lottery, having each participating team’s mascot attend the event would be great. A room full of mascots anxiously waiting to see where their team winds up drafting sounds like, if not must-watch television, a definite upgrade over the current arrangement.

He seemed to be in good spirits despite Vancouver’s disappointing result at the draw and the obvious let-down of not being able to attend it in person… in mascot?
