NFL Week 5 Superlatives: Finally we see a return to team touchdown celebrations

We’ve unveiled a new feature this season – weekly NFL superlatives. It’s meant to be a lighthearted look at Sunday’s games, as we highlight best shoes, cutest couple and biggest heartbreaker. Here are the picks for Week 5:

Best Team Spirit: Philadelphia Eagles

Finally, we see the return of the coordinated, choreographed team touchdown celebration. The Eagles were all about having fun on Sunday – four receivers scored touchdowns – and after a 59-yard Carson Wentz-to-Torrey Smith hookup in the first quarter, Smith and five of his teammates recognized the MLB playoffs (and Angels star Mike Trout, who was in the stands and grew up about 40 miles away in New Jersey) with a home run celebration.

Best Shoes: Jalen Ramsey, Jacksonville

Ramsey’s custom-made cleats recognized the tragedy in Las Vegas a week earlier, with the iconic “Welcome to Las Vegas” sign on the outside and names of the victims and praying hands on the inside. The Jaguars tweeted that Ramsey would auction off the shoes, with the money going to the victims’ fund.

Biggest Heartbreaker: J.J. Watt, Houston

It’s understandable if Texans fans shed tears on Sunday night. The sight of Watt, who has played through gruesome-looking injuries, from a bloodied nose to bent fingers, visibly in pain after suffering a significant knee injury and then carted out of the stadium in an ambulance, is tough. But add in Watt missing much of last season with a back injury, plus what he’s been doing for Houston since Hurricane Harvey, and it was like seeing Paul Bunyan go down.

Freshman Class President: Leonard Fournette, Jacksonville

Kansas City’s Kareem Hunt has been getting a lot of attention for his rookie-season performance for the undefeated Chiefs, but don’t overlook Fournette. The fourth overall pick had 181 rushing yards on 28 carries as the Jaguars got a big win on the road in Pittsburgh. His two touchdowns on the day give him five in five games.

Class Clown: Ben Roethlisberger, Pittsburgh

If you’re going to call a teammate out and call him a distraction, you better back it up with some strong play, leading by example. After saying Antonio Brown threw a “temper tantrum” in throwing a Gatorade cooler during last week’s game against Baltimore, Roethlisberger had a career-worst five interceptions in the Steelers home loss to Jacksonville, two of them pick-sixes. After talking about retirement in the offseason, after the game Roethlisberger said, “Maybe I don’t have it anymore.”

Cutest Couple: Anthony Levine Sr. and Tony Jefferson, Baltimore

As the kids say, #goals. After Levine, a sixth-year safety, got a third-quarter, third-down sack of the Raiders’ E.J. Manuel, he and Jefferson, also a veteran safety, launched into an intricate hand-slapping, dancing handshake.

Drama King: Aaron Rodgers, Green Bay

Rodgers has led the Packers to wins in three of their last four games against Dallas, including Sunday when the Cowboys bled as much time off the clock as possible, gave Rodgers just 1:13 and one timeout to get the game-winning touchdown – and he did it. High drama.

Best Dressed: Tyrod Taylor, Buffalo

A slim-cut suit isn’t for every man. But Taylor pulls off his wine-hued plaid suit and purple tie for the Bills’ trip to Cincinnati with aplomb. The pocket square, the shoes, the watch, and even the headphones – it all works.
