NFL roundup: Vick, Freeman will start Sunday

Quarterbacks Josh Freeman and Michael Vick will be back on the job Sunday.

Freeman received a vote of confidence after a poor performance Monday in his Minnesota Viking debut. Vick will regain the starting role from Nick Foles, who exited his Sunday start due to a concussion. Vick missed two games due to a hamstring injury.

Freeman was 20 of 53 for 190 yards, no touchdowns and one interception during the Vikings' 23-7 loss to the Giants. He will start Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers, coach Leslie Frazier announced.

"If I had to do it over again, I don't think I would do it any differently," Frazier said of throwing Freeman into the lineup less than two weeks after he joined the Vikings. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Freeman earlier this month.

In Philadelphia, Vick took the first-team reps in Tuesday's practice, but he didn't push hard for fear of a setback.

"It's too early to (test) it," said Vick, who will start Sunday against the New York Giants. "I wish I could give you a definite answer on (starting), but I can't right now. At some point I'll do that -- I'll test it out this week."

--Reggie Wayne's 2013 season officially ended Tuesday with the Indianapolis Colts placing the wide receiver on injured reserve.

Wayne suffered a torn ACL in his knee during Sunday night's victory against Denver. Cornerback Jalil Brown was signed to fill his roster spot and help fortify a secondary that was banged up against the Broncos.

Wayne, 34, will undergo surgery in the near future, with the goal of returning in 2014.

The Colts also waived tight end Dominique Jones from the active roster and released fullback Robert Hughes from the practice squad.

--The Cleveland Browns were contacted by at least three teams willing to deal a high pick and a player in exchange for wide receiver Josh Gordon, according to ESPN.

The second-year player is second on the Browns with 27 receptions for 450 yards and two touchdowns despite being suspended for the first two games of the season.

The trade deadline is Oct. 29, and Cleveland coach Rob Chudzinski previously said the team isn't interested in trading Gordon. According to the report, the Browns are hesitant to deal Gordon unless the trade offers improve.

--Carolina Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart said he plans to return for the first time in a year on Nov. 3 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Stewart received a standing ovation earlier in the day when he returned to the practice field for the first time since injuring his right ankle last Nov. 26.

--Fullback Michael Robinson re-signed with the Seattle Seahawks.

Derrick Coleman, who beat out Robinson for the starting job during the preseason, suffered a hamstring injury against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night, and rookie Spencer Ware was placed on injured reserve with the ankle injury that had sidelined him since Week 2.

The Seahawks also released wide receiver Josh Lenz from the practice squad and signed wide receiver Ricardo Lockette and guard Zach Allen to the practice squad.

--The Detroit Lions released veteran tight end Tony Scheffler and signed veteran offensive tackle Barry Richardson, the team announced.

Scheffler had been sidelined the last two weeks with a concussion, but he was cleared to return from the concussion he suffered Oct. 6 against the Green Bay Packers. He had been with the Lions since the 2010 season.

--The Vikings announced they have claimed cornerback Shaun Prater and released cornerback Jacob Lacey. Prater was waived by Philadelphia on Monday. He played one game for the Eagles, who claimed him off of waivers from the Cincinnati Bengals at the end of the preseason.

--Washington Redskins safety Brandon Meriweather appealed his two-game suspension issued by the NFL for repeat violations of the rules prohibiting hits to the head and neck area of defenseless players, multiple media outlets reported.

Meriweather, 29, was cited for two illegal hits in Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears. He was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the third quarter for a helmet-to-helmet hit on a defenseless receiver and again in the fourth quarter for a hit to the head and neck area of a defenseless receiver.

The appeal will be heard on Wednesday, according to USA Today.

--The St. Louis Rams added two quarterbacks to their roster when they brought back Austin Davis and signed veteran Brady Quinn.

To make room for the pair on the active roster, the Rams released offensive lineman Brandon Washington and placed starting quarterback Sam Bradford on injured reserve. Bradford suffered a season-ending knee injury against Carolina on Sunday.

--Former Houston Texans defensive end Sam Montgomery, through his agent, denied an ESPN.com report that he was released by the team for marijuana use. The Texans released three players Monday for violating team rules -- Montgomery, outside linebacker Willie Jefferson and running back Cierre Wood.

--The Atlanta Falcons tweaked their linebacker depth chart by signing Thomas Howard and waiving Jamar Chaney. Safety Sean Baker was also signed to the practice squad.

--The New Orleans Saints promoted quarterback Ryan Griffin from their practice squad to the active roster, possibly to avoid other teams from trying to claim him. The Saints were carrying just two quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Luke McCown, on the 53-man roster. Griffin is an undrafted rookie from Tulane.

--Cleveland signed wide receiver Brian Tyms off the Miami Dolphins' practice squad, the Browns announced. To make room, the Browns waived wide receiver Tori Gurley.

--Veteran defensive end Andre Carter is expected to sign with the New England Patriots after a tryout Monday. ESPN reported Carter, 34, would be added as injuries mount for the Patriots' defense. Carter played in 12 games last season and had 2.5 sacks for the Oakland Raiders.
