NFL-National Football League roundup

May 4 (The Sports Xchange) - Houston Texans owner Bob McNair called South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney "obviously the best player" as his team, which has the number one overall pick, prepares for this week's 2014 NFL Draft. McNair's comments follow general manager Rick Smith's remarks last week that he knows exactly what he intends to do with the top pick when Houston is officially on the clock Thursday to open the draft in New York. "Really at this point we don't know and we really won't know until right up at the time we have to make a decision because people are talking to us about the possibility of trading down and it's a question of what people offer, whether their offer is such that it's worthwhile to trade down," McNair told Fox 26 in Houston. "You take a guy like Jadeveon Clowney. He's obviously the best player in the draft, but he's a defensive end. He's not a quarterback. If he's a quarterback and the best player it's easy, but that's not the case. So can that defensive player have a greater impact on the success of your team than one of these quarterbacks? It's not a sure thing that he is." - - - New York Jets quarterback Michael Vick said that Geno Smith is the starter. Vick, who signed with the Jets in March to compete for the starting job, made the comment in an interview with NJ.com. "Geno's the starting quarterback for that football team," Vick said. "Ultimately our goal is to try to help Geno become the best quarterback that he can be." - - - Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning visited New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter at Yankee Stadium on Sunday morning. Manning stood near the batting cage and spoke with Jeter while he took breaks from batting practice. "I came to see Derek play," Manning said. "Derek and I have been friends - he's a couple years older than me, but we've been pretty much professionals at the same time. So I wanted to pay my respects and see him play for the last time." - - - The Green Bay Packers are working on a contract extension for coach Mike McCarthy, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Team president Mark Murphy began working on the extension to keep McCarthy in Green Bay beyond 2015. McCarthy, 50, is 82-45-1 in the regular season and 6-5 in the playoffs, including one Super Bowl title in eight seasons. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
