Next X-Men Sequel To Shoot In 2017 With Director Bryan Singer

The follow-up to ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ will reportedly shoot in 2017 with Bryan Singer once again at the helm. It will be the seventh mainline 'X-Men’ film since the original in 2000.

Journal De Montreal, who broke the news that 'Apocalypse’ was heading back to Montreal, Canada for reshoots, has claimed the production will begin in early 2017.

Next year’s 'Apocalypse’ will set up a younger generation of mutant superheroes who will become the focus as the series moves into its third phase.

The first phase began in 2000 and focused on the Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellan generation which introduced Hugh Jackman. The second phase began with prequel 'First Class’ in 2011 and starred Jennifer Lawrence, James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender.

Lawrence is likely to be done with the series following 'Apocalypse’ but it’s entirely possible that McAvoy and Fassbender could return for future films - particularly the former who as Professor X is, of course, integral to the X-Men team.

The younger generation of heroes will be led by Sophie Turner’s Jean Grey, Tye Sheridan’s Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp’s Storm and Kodi Smit-McPhee’s Nightcrawler.

Others, including Ben Hardy as Angel, Lana Condor as Jubilee, Lucas Till as Havok, Olivia Munn as Psylocke and Evan Peters as Quicksilver could also potentially return for more movies.

There’s also the small matter of Hugh Jackman’s final turn as Wolverine in his third solo movie, set for 2017. Recasting the character seems inevitable and the next 'X-Men’ could be the time to introduce him.

All this, as the 'X-Men’ universe continues to grow with the release of 'Deadpool’ in February 2016 and Channing Tatum’s 'Gambit’ sometime after. Both could feature in future 'X-Men’ films.

'Apocalypse’ meanwhile will be released on 19 May 2016.
