Where are the next Olympics being held?
With yet another Olympics coming to a close in South Korea, the world’s attention is turning toward the sites of the next games. Here’s a look at the cities that are set to host in the near future.
2020 Summer Olympics: Tokyo
If you’re already going through Olympic withdrawals, you have 880 days to wait for the next one. The 2020 Olympics will be start in Tokyo on July 24, 2020 and will be the second of three straight Olympics held in Asia. Tokyo last hosted the Summer Games in 1964.
Four new sports will make their Olympic debut in 2020; surfing, skateboarding, sport climbing and karate. Baseball and softball will also make their return.
2022 Winter Olympics: Beijing
The next host of the Winter Olympics is getting an eight-minute segment to sell itself in PyeongChang’s Closing Ceremony and the truth is that it might need it. Beijing was only one of two cities to stick around for the 2022 bid (the other was Almaty, Kazakhstan after six European cities pulled out of the bidding process) and doesn’t exactly scream “winter hamlet.” It will be the first Winter Olympics held in China and the first since the 2008 Summer Games were held in Beijing.
2024 Summer Olympics: Paris
These games will mark the 100th anniversary of the 1924 Paris Olympics and were awarded by the IOC last September after three unsuccessful Parisian bids over the previous 25 years. Paris will join London as the only city to host the Summer Games three times.
2026 Winter Olympics: TBA (Sept. 2019)
Wishing to avoid the slim candidate field that 2022 produced, the IOC introduced a simplified bid process for these games. Six sites are exploring potential bids: Graz and Schladming, Austria; Erzurum, Turkey; Sion, Switzerland; Sapporo, Japan; Stockholm, Sweden and Calgary, Canada.

2028 Summer Olympics: Los Angeles
The Olympics will return to the site of what is considered one of the most successful games of all-time. Los Angeles was awarded the games at the same time as 2024 Paris last September and featured a bid that was heavy on existing infrastructure and promised legacy programs for California residents. Los Angeles is set to become the third three-time host as it also hosted the 1932 games.
2030 Winter Olympics: TBA
It’s way too early to project a list of potential bidders, but Salt Lake City officials said earlier this month that they’re interested in exploring a bid. The 2002 Winter Games were held in Utah and Salt Lake organizes believe they could pull it off 28 years later without losing any money.
