Next generation of agriculture shines at Van Zandt County Fair and Livestock Show

CANTON, Texas (KETK) – The Van Zandt County Fair and Livestock Show is giving the next generation the opportunity to shine.

Harper Ellis has been showing animals since the second grade. She is now a freshman at Canton High School and says her favorite part of the show is meeting the younger generation.

“That really puts something on my heart because I want to make sure that the future of agriculture has a future, and that we can continue this amazing, amazing industry,” Canton FFA freshman Harper Ellis said.

A few days into the Van Zandt County Fair and Livestock show, Ellis said she hopes even more young people will get involved in showing.

“I’ve been up here all week and I’ve stayed late helping kids because I want to make sure that these kids know that there’s a home here and they are totally welcome anytime, anywhere,” Ellis said.

She was helping students like 14-year-old Kennedi Tucker from Grand Saline feel comfortable and confident in the ring. Tucker’s first year of showing came with one extra hurdle: nerves.

“Just nervous to go in the ring,” Tucker said.

But that didn’t stop her from getting her goat Grocery prepared for the big day.

“Having the connection with your goat, he’s just your good furry friend,” Tucker said.

Ellis says she is proud of all the younger children taking on the challenge, and leaves them with one piece of advice.

“Keep going, it’s going to be hard,” Ellis said. “But you just always need to persevere and trust the Lord with all your heart because he will do everything that you need him to do.”

The Van Zandt County Fair and Livestock Show will continue through March 30.
