From Road & Track

The new Ford Fiesta made its European debut this week, but we've already got the hotter Fiesta ST on our minds. Are we being impatient? Sure, but the current Fiesta ST is one of our favorite performance cars, an exciting bargain at just over $20,000.

Thankfully, Dutch automotive publication AutoRAI spoke with Ford's Tyrone Johnson [link in Dutch], head of development on the next ST, to get some details. Johnson revealed that the next-gen Fiesta ST will debut at the end of 2017 as a 2018 model.

Johnson declined to go into specifics on the next ST's engine, but he said a big power boost isn't on the table. The next Fiesta ST is rumored to get a turbocharged three-cylinder engine, which could help keep weight down, and provide a growly soundtrack.

Unlike Ford's new, crazy Focus RS, the Fiesta ST will remain front-wheel-drive only, but according to a Google Dutch-to-English translation it seems like the new Fiesta ST will get selectable drive modes.

As long as Ford keeps the Fiesta ST light, nimble, and simple like the current one, it should be another enthusiast favorite. We'll find out soon enough.
