Who should be the next Caller-Times Student of the Week?

It's time to vote for the Caller-Times Student of the Week.

Voting is open until noon on Thursday, March 14.

Participating Coastal Bend high school principals, teachers and guidance counselors nominated high school students they say have shown outstanding academic and school achievement and community service.

We will announce a winner and runner-up Friday.

Here are the nominees:

  • Lucy Alvarez is a senior at Calallen High School. Alvarez is currently president of the senior class, president of her 4-H Club and president of the Spanish National Honor Society. She is a Daughter of the American Revolution scholarship nominee. She is an "outstanding senior" and "true leader among her class", according to her nomination from Calallen ISD. Alvarez advanced to the state soccer playoffs her freshman year, playing alongside her sister, who was a senior at the time.

  • Addyson Lapp is a senior at Flour Bluff High School. Lapp packs her schedule full of activities daily, including high school marching band, color guard and National Honor Society. She is co-editor of the school yearbook. She plans to attend University of Texas-San Antonio to study psychology and eventually attend graduate school and earn a doctorate of psychology. She enjoys reading, photography, listening to music, baking and cooking and researching new things. "Her commitment and her work ethic are amazing," teacher Amy Brandewie said in her nomination.

  • Gabriel Cuellar is a a senior at Banquete High School. Cuellar plans to attend Del Mar College in the fall to become a labor and delivery nurse because he has always wanted to help babies have a fighting chance at life. He is currently certified in EKG, phlebotomy and patient care and is working towards a medical assistant certification. He is taking dual credit classes through Coastal Bend College. Gabriel has been the school mascot for the past two years, and also participates in district One Act Play competitions and theater programs, with leading and supporting roles. Gabriel also competes with the Banquete UIL math team.

  • Sami Gregory is a senior at Gregory-Portland High School. Gregory is currently enrolled in AP English, AP Chemistry, AP Government, AP Economics and AP Statistics. She is involved in theater, speech and debate, cross country and track. She is vice president of the National Honor Society and secretary of the Science National Honor Society. She also serves as a mentor for middle school future debaters. She recently competed against the best debaters in the country at Harvard University where she was an octa-finalist. She recently served on the Texas Association of School Board student voice panel. She plans to attend the University of Texas to pursue a PhD in psychology.
