Newsmakers to Feature Lackawanna College Police Academy, Sunday, March 10, 2024
(WBRE/WYOU) Training a new generation of police officers will be the focus of this Sunday’s Newsmakers. The monthly public affairs program is hosted by Jayne Ann Bugda and Andy Mehalshick.
Bugda and Mehalshick will be joined by Kevin F. Mahoney, Director of Police Academy Operations, Lackawanna College Police Academy, and Gerard Dessoye, Academy Assistant Director, Lackawanna College Police Academy. They will discuss the Police Academy at Lackawanna College. The program is offered at the Scranton and Hazleton Campuses. Mahoney and Dessoye will discuss the requirements to be accepted, the extensive training, and the need for new officers. The two long-time law enforcement officers will also discuss the challenges of being an officer and how police training has changed over the years.
Newsmakers will air this Sunday, March 10th at 7:30 am on WYOU and 11:30 am on WBRE.
The Lackawanna College Police Academy has trained thousands of police officers in Northeastern Pennsylvania.
The law enforcement field is expected to grow by 7% over the next 10 years and police officers are needed.
Lackawanna College offers a unique opportunity to obtain certification from its Police Academy along with an associate degree in Criminal Justice in two years.
Lackawanna College is the only private college in northeastern Pennsylvania that provides this combined education.
In addition to the curriculum provided by the Municipal Police Officers Training. Cadets participate in simulated weapons training, mental health first aid, child abuse and domestic violence protocol training, and a variety of other hands-on training types.
