Word on the (palm tree-lined) street is that the UFO-esque residence that belonged to actor Bob Hope and his wife, Delores, will soon be the latest John Lautner design to hit the market, potentially asking an eye-popping $45M—more than 32 times the ask of Lautner's famed Schaffer Residence. Only time will tell if the rumored price tag will prove to be the latest in a string of overly ambitious celebrity asks destined to eventually go sour; after all, as the Real Estalker is quick to point out, it wasn't so long ago that the, uh, unique Palm Springs residence of self-help guru Suzanne Somers endured a $22M price slash, plunging from $35M to $12.9M. Anyway, shots and descriptions of what lies beneath the Hope Residence's undulating concrete roof are scant, as the home was rarely open to the public, and even combing through decades-old descriptions of the 17,500-square-foot house reveal little except there were very tall glass walls, a baby grand piano, and rooms with "a surprisingly real feeling," whatever that means. But even with the interiors shrouded in a fairly rare cloak of celebrity real estate mystery, the location, at the crest of a pricey gated community near the Coachella Valley, and the primo views afforded by those transparent walls imply a feel that stands out as sleek and opulent, even in the land of sprawling midcentury abodes.
