NEW DEAL: Residents of the town of Pavillion in the Wind River Reservation of central Wyoming said they were excluded from a deal that has the state taking over further study of groundwater pollution from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
NO CONSULTATION: The residents went to the EPA help, they say, after Wyoming agencies didn't do enough to address their complaints when their water began to reek of chemicals in 2005. That was around the same time that Encana Corp. began to employ hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, in nearby gas wells.
COMPANY FUNDED: The EPA theorized in 2011 that fracking may have contaminated the groundwater near the town. The agency now says it won't issue a final report or have outside experts review the research, as planned. Instead, Wyoming will take over the study with help from $1.5 million from Encana.
