HOME SURGE: Home construction company PulteGroup rose 4 percent after home prices jumped 12.1 percent in April, the most since March 2006. That report as well as a surge in consumer confidence helped send the market higher.

Markets have been jittery over the past week as traders watch troubling signs in China's economy and get ready for the eventual end of economic stimulus from the Federal Reserve.
