Johnson & Johnson recalls all OneTouch VerioIQ blood sugar meters due to risky malfunction

FAULTY METERS: Johnson & Johnson is recalling several types of its blood glucose meters sold in the U.S. and other countries because of malfunctions. In the U.S., OneTouch VerioIQ meters are being replaced for free.

THE PROBLEM: When a diabetic's blood sugar level is dangerously high, the meters don't provide a warning and instead turn off. Three other OneTouch types sold elsewhere display an incorrect reading at very high glucose levels.

THE STREAK: Since September 2009, the giant health care products maker has issued about three dozen recalls, for prescription and nonprescription medicines, contact lenses and hip implants.
