News Summary: Glaxo starts recycling inhalers

BREATHING EASIER: For the first time, U.S. patients can recycle used respiratory inhalers, under British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline's just-launched "Complete the Cycle" program.

THE PROGRAM: Patients can drop off inhalers — from Advair maker Glaxo or other companies — at participating pharmacies in 31 cities, listed at www.GSKCompleteTheCycle.com. They'll ship them to a Glaxo recycling contractor, who will separate plastic, metal and other parts for reuse.

THE GOAL: Glaxo hopes to collect at least 100,000 inhalers by late next year, then will decide where to expand the program.
