News on the move: Jet crash in Russia kills more than 40

Russian plane crash

Russian investigators will analyze the black box recorders recovered from an Aeroflot jetliner that crashed Sunday during an emergency landing outside Moscow. At least 41 people were killed when the back of the plane burst into flames. The U.S. State Department says at least one of the dead is a U.S. citizen. Thirty-three passengers and four crew members were able to escape. Aeroflot says the flight crew had 1,400 hours of experience flying the type of jet that crashed. The pilots requested a return to the airport shortly after take off.

Brunei death penalty

The Sultan of Brunei says his country will not execute people convicted of adultery or engaging in gay sex. Brunei recently codified punishments under Islamic law which call for the death penalty. Several countries including the United States, Germany and the United Kingdom condemned the brutality of the punishments. Several, which include whipping and amputation, remain on the books in Brunei.

Gaza cease fire

A cease fire in Gaza appears to be holding. It went into effect early Monday morning following a weekend of violence between Hamas, Islamic JIihad and Israel. At least 27 people were killed on both sides. Hamas and Islamic Jihad fired more than 700 rockets into Israel which retaliated with air strikes on targets inside Gaza. President Donald Trump tweeted the U.S. supports Israel's right to defend citizens writing, "terrorist acts against Israel will bring you nothing but more misery.”

Cohen starts prison sentence

President Donald Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen begins his three-year prison sentence today at a federal prison in New York. He was convicted of campaign finance violations, tax evasion and arranging hush money payments to women who allegedly had affairs, in years past, with Trump. Cohen spoke several times with Robert Mueller's investigative team as well as federal prosecutors investigating Trump's business dealings before he was elected president.
