Military banners

Newcomerstown Now has announced a Hometown Heroes Remember and Honor Military banner program. Banners will be mounted along State Street to honor those who are currently or have previously served in the military. The program was created for residents to pay tribute and honor family members.

For the banner, an official military high-resolution photo is needed. The photo should be at least 5"x7" or, if digital, 300 DPI. If no photo is available, you can provide name, branch, and years of service for the banner. The village and Newcomerstown Now will hang the banners.

Application are available at the village offices on South College Street during business hours. The cost for a two-year display period is $135. The display period each year is May through mid-November. This is a first-come first-serve program and the application deadline is Feb. 20. For more information, call the mayor's office at 740-498-6313.

Newcomerstown Now is a local organization dedicated to the revitalization of the village, and all funds raised go for this cause.During the recent village council meeting, Street Department Supervisor Travis Goodwill said all street and cemetery equipment is now stored in the Bridge Street buildings. He has applied for a grant through the EPA for a brine tank and associated equipment that will help eliminate salt going into storm sewers. James Friel and Steve Guy were appointed to the open seats on the Board of Public Affairs. Scott Powell of the cemetery department said trees planted as far back as the 1880s are being cut down at the State Street Cemetery and Allen Collins was sworn in as a council member to fill the vacant seat.

The next council meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 15, at the village office.
