Newark woman receives League of Women Voters of Licking County community engagement award

Kandice Hairston, of Newark, was selected for the 2024 Rita Kipp Community Engagement Award. Candidates were nominated based on a criterion of having made a significant contribution in Licking County through non-partisan advocacy, community organizing, and/or civic engagement.

Lyn Robertson nominated Hairston and described her as the personification of selfless community engagement. Her award is in recognition of her inspiring leadership, personal example, and caring outreach to community members moving out of addiction and into recovery.

Hairston was an organizing force with the REAL Book Club (Reading Elevates All Lives) a diverse community group in which participants read books that help erase the barriers of race, income, and education levels. She has been an active member of the Newark Think Tank on Poverty and the Newark Center of Civic Engagement of Licking County. She is also a volunteer leader in a women’s support group whose members navigate their addiction recovery.

The Rita Kipp Community Engagement Award is presented annually by the League of Women Voters of Licking County. The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
