New Steve Jobs Film Performing Worse Than Panned Ashton Kutcher Version

Danny Boyle’s Apple biopic ‘Steve Jobs’ has been a bit of a flop in the US despite the pedigree of its Oscar-winning director, screenplay by acclaimed writer Aaron Sorkin, and star-studded cast including Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet.

To add salt to the iWound, it’s emerged that the film has been beaten at the domestic box office by ‘Jobs’, the much-derided 2013 movie starring Ashton Kutcher as the tech icon, over their first 24 days on release.

The data highlighted on Box Office Mojo reveals Fassbender’s film took just $14,540,683 (£9.4m) in its first 24 days, while Kutcher’s ‘Jobs’ took $15,524,128 (£10m).

With an estimated budget of $30m, ‘Steve Jobs’ needs to take at least $120m to cover the cost of making and marketing the movie, so it looks like it could prove to be a costly misadventure for Universal Pictures who took on the film after Sony Pictures dropped it at the 11th hour. The film has yet to be released internationally.

In contrast, the less starry ‘Jobs’ which hit US cinemas in August 2013, cost an estimated $12m to make and went on to gross $35.9m making it a modest financial success.

Danny Boyle will be hoping the film performs a bit better overseas when it’s released in Europe, Asia, and South America over the coming months or it could be 3 flops in a row for the British film-maker who – aside from the 2012 Olympics opening ceremony – has so far failed to capitilise on the Oscar-winning success of 2008’s ‘Slumdog Millionaire’.

2010’s ‘127 Hours’ was a critical hit, but struggled at the box office, while 2013’s 'Trance’ massively missed its mark taking just $24.2m at the global box office.

‘Steve Jobs’ is coming to UK cinemas on 13 November. Watch a trailer below.
