This new AR headset is the closest thing to being Iron Man
Why let Robert Downey Jr. have all the fun fighting Thanos when you can go one-on-one with the Infinity Stone-hunting galactic tyrant yourself? That’s an opportunity offered by the Hero Vision Iron Man AR Experience, a new augmented-reality device from Hasbro and Marvel. Timed to hit shelves when Avengers: Infinity War hits theaters later this spring, Hero Vision puts the young (and young at heart) inside Tony Stark’s Iron Man headpiece, letting you see the world through the superhero’s eyes. And that world is constantly under threat from Thanos and his forces, who carry out a sustained attack on the earth over 10 levels of play.
Retailing for $49.99 and powered by an app in the App Store and Google Play that can be downloaded to select devices, Hero Vision offers an experience that begins when you scatter circular markers over the floor of your superhero hideout of choice and lower ol’ Shellhead’s, uh, shellhead over your own noggin. Once the app is fired up and your gauntlet is strapped on, out of those markers spring your adversaries, who threaten your own safety — not to mention the safety of New York — while Thanos taunts you from an interdimensional portal high above.
How do you fight back against these alien invaders? It’s as easy as raising your hand. That motion fires blasts at your attackers or, when you lift your hand with the palm facing your helmet, powers up your shields. You can also reach out and grab special items that occasionally pop up onscreen, items like the brightly colored, reality-manipulating stones that this whole war is about. One warning: In your mind, you’ll be looking like this:
But in reality, you’ll more likely look like this — at least until your get your iron sea legs.
It’s worth noting that the Hero Vision AR experience doesn’t directly follow the plot of Infinity War, although there are some Easter eggs for that blockbuster in the form of cameos from other Marvel Cinematic Universe favorites. And while there’s not a cooperative play mode that allows you to, say, pair Iron Man and War Machine, you can play alongside your friends and see which of you bests Thanos first. In the infinity of Infinity War toys coming your way in 2018, Hero Vision is the one that arguably comes the closest to putting you in the movie.
Marvel Avengers: Infinity War Hero Vision Iron Man AR Experience will be available in spring 2018. Avengers: Infinity War opens in theaters on May 4.
