Never Have I Ever season 3 needs to tackle these BIG issues
Never Have I Ever spoilers follow.
Just like its debut season, Never Have I Ever's second outing bowed out with several big unanswered questions to mull over, in turn leaving us desperate for the next batch of episodes.
Netflix has yet to confirm the show's future but that hasn't stopped us from exploring what a potential season three will bring to the table, from the ongoing Ben-Paxton saga to Nalini's love life.
Will Devi and Paxton go the distance?
There was a seismic development in Devi and Paxton's relationship at the end of season two when the pair arrived at the winter dance holding hands for all to see. Paxton had previously wanted to keep their late-night smooching sessions secret for fear of being judged by his peers for forgiving Devi after she had two-timed him with Ben.
But that wasn't enough for the protagonist who made it clear that she would be no one's dirty little secret, not even dreamy Paxton's, and for a split second they called time on their romance. But it didn't take long for Paxton to twig that despite being largely different in every single way, they made a great team, and he headed to the dance to make it official. And they both lived happily ever after, the end. Except this is Never Have I Ever, which means the course of true love, and everything else for that matter, never does run smooth.
Trent looked both confused (which is nothing new) and somewhat disappointed when his best friend and Devi arrived at the dance as a couple. Will he and the rest of Paxton's friends accept his relationship with a girl who has already burned him once before? Or will Paxton bow to any potential pressure and call it off?
Are Devi and Paxton really built to last? Opposites can attract but will their differences create a gulf in their relationship that they're unable to overcome? Devi is also still working through her emotions following the sudden death of her father, which can be a challenge for those around her, too. Will that prove overwhelming for Paxton?
It also goes without saying that Devi's mother Nalini is unlikely to champion their relationship, certainly not at first, which will create bumps in the road. And there's the small matter of Ben, which brings us nicely to...
What about the other guy?
Devi's ex-boyfriend and academic competitor Ben had seemingly moved on with the newest addition to the Sherman Oaks student body, Aneesa. But we all knew that wasn't really the case given a number of lingering looks between Ben and Devi, including a moment at the dance when he was in the middle of asking her a question, before his girlfriend interrupted.
We don't know if he was suggesting that they simply bury the hatchet or if Ben was testing the waters to see if him and Devi could get back on track romantically, but his relationship with Aneesa clearly isn't going to last, especially now that Ben knows "it's not always been" Paxton, courtesy of Eleanor.
Will Ben bite the bullet and confess to Devi that he's still totally besotted with her? And if he does, what decision will she make? We feel another pros and cons list in the works...
Will Ben employ every trick in the book to sabotage Devi's relationship? Or will he sit back and wait in the hope that they stumble?
Is Devi on the path to managing her grief?
Devi has a habit of letting her emotions consume her and when that happens, lord help anyone in close proximity. From accidentally starting a savage rumour about Aneesa to allowing a coyote to chow down on her face to stalking her mother on a date, Devi's decision making isn't always healthy, but she made a rare breakthrough in one of her therapy sessions with Dr Jamie Ryan, which signals a more harmonious future.
But will Devi follow the doc's advice and continue to confront her emotions, or allow them to get the better of her? Our Spidey senses are predicting a cocktail of sorts, so expect further fireworks in season three.
Are Nalini and Dr Chris Jackson really over?
Devi's mum took a big step in season two when she started dating again. Sparks were flying between Nalini and Chris, a former foe turned love interest, but their romance was short-lived. Devi confronted them during a dinner date and Nalini decided to call it a day, both for Devi and for herself. Like her daughter, the heartache of losing Mohan was still too raw and as much as she liked Chris and his excellent cooking skills, she felt that it was too soon.
But given that they work in the same vicinity, they're bound to bump into one another. Will they grow close once again over time? And will Devi learn to accept that her mother deserves to be happy? Will someone else pop up and find a way into her heart?
What will Kamala do about Prashant?
Kamala's relationship with Prashant was bobbing along nicely until the pair disagreed over how she should handle Evan's snub. According to her boyfriend, Kamala should just accept defeat and keep her head down to avoid being labelled a "difficult" woman. But that didn't sit well with her and Kamala submitted the research paper with her name on it, spurred on by Devi's advice. It was a key moment and raised serious questions about their compatibility.
At the end of season two, Prashant was on the verge of proposing, but Kamala had no desire to get hitched and she stole away from the engagement dinner with him and his parents, and headed to meet Mr Kulkarni at teachers' karaoke. It feels like Prashant's time is up, but waiting in the wings is Mr K, who is clearly smitten with Kamala. Has she finally met the man for her?
It feels unlikely that wedding bells be ringing in season three given how focused she is on her career, but that doesn't mean she can't enjoy a little romance along the way.
Have Fabiola and Eve finally found their rhythm?
Season two was another learning curve for Fabiola. After coming out and bagging herself a girlfriend, she had to learn how to balance her new life – Eve and all of her friends and interests – with her old life – being captain of the robotics team.
Initially, Fabiola was so wrapped up in appeasing her girlfriend and winning Cricket Queen that she lost herself. But by the end, she had reunited with Gears Brosnan and vowed to stay true to who she is, and not who other people expect her to be.
Luckily for Fab, Eve loves her just the way she is, but will they stay on the same page in season three? Or are there more hurdles ahead?
Are Eleanor and Trent now an item?
At the winter dance, Trent took us by surprise when he expressed an interest in Eleanor or "Erica", as he initially called her, and the pair, although wildly different in numerous ways, did look sweet together. He might not match her intellectually, but he's certainly an upgrade from Malcom, who dumped her over text.
Will the pair make it official? And can we look forward to plenty of double dates between Devi and Paxton, and Eleanor and Trent? Or will Eleanor set her sights on a new love interest?
