Nevada animal shelter flooded after weekend storms

VERNON COUNTY, Mo. — Weekend storms in southwest Missouri damaged a culvert and in turn flooded an animal shelter, officials say.

According to the Nevada Missouri Animal Shelter, a culvert north of the facility (below) broke free around 10:30 p.m. Sunday, splitting up the road above it. Rising waters from area then washed into the low-lying shelter.

It’s due to high water from both the Little Osage and Marmanton rivers which have caused numerous road closures and washouts.

The animal shelter opened just late last month.

Employees reportedly worked until early Monday morning to evacuate animals to temporary locations. No animals died, during the event.

The shelter says it will be closed for the time being.
